Task 10: Establish Indicators

Identify preliminary indicators

An indicator is a tool for measuring performance moving towards or away from the goals, and ultimately, the sustainable neighbourhood vision. The sustainability consultant translates each goal into one or more clearly defined indicators that can be further used to guide and focus planning and design decisions over the course of the charrette process.

Deliver an indicator-setting workshop

Stakeholders are brought together in a workshop facilitated by the sustainability consultant. The intent of the workshop is to prioritize the preliminary set of indicators, make adjustments as necessary and establish a mutually agreed upon set of indicators for the project.

Confirm project indicators

Based on input from the workshop, the sustainability consultant finalizes a set of project indicators. The list is reviewed by the key stakeholders, refined as necessary and shared as an important milestone with the broader stakeholder group. The indicators are used as a basis for establishing targets to be achieved during the charrette design. In the context of the SuNliving approach, it is crucial that the selected indicators are relevant to the design of a spatial realm.
